Press Release: Krom for Congress Campaign Helps Local Shelters

IRVINE, CA, February 16, 2010 — The Beth Krom for Congress Campaign (CA-48) held their second community outreach service project this past Saturday (February 13, 2010).  Congressional candidate, Beth Krom, greeted people in Dana Point and Irvine who came to drop off toiletries and personal care items needed by local domestic abuse shelters and transitional living programs.

Following the success of January’s canned food drive which brought in thousands of canned and other non-perishable food items to help restock the shelves of local food banks, the Beth Krom for Congress campaign undertook this event to provide bars of soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other personal care items to non-profit programs that help those in need.

The items donated from this weekend’s drive will be delivered to three local shelters: Friendship Shelter in Laguna Beach, Toby’s House in San Clemente (which services Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano) and Human Options in Irvine.

“Once again, people throughout the district showed they ‘Have a Heart’ by helping us collect boxes and boxes of personal care items to help those less fortunate,” Krom said. “While the downturn in the economy affects everyone, programs serving the homeless and victims of domestic abuse have seen a sharp increase. People are looking for ways to help others – demonstrating that each of us can play a role in strengthening and supporting our communities during these challenging times.”

This was the second grassroots community-building event of the campaign.  Last month, Krom visited all 12 cities within the district over a two-day period, met with local residents and collected thousands of canned food donations for local food banks.

“These events provide a wonderful opportunity to hear from constituents about the issues they are most concerned about,” remarked Krom. “We’ve had the chance to introduce our campaign to people throughout the district and from every part of the political spectrum. That’s what campaigns should be.”

The campaign provided a live feed of the weekend through their Twitter and Facebook sites.  Click here to view the tweets that were sent over the weekend.
